Inaugurated in May 2024, FLEXA makes its debut at an art fair with a presentation at ArtRio, featuring a selection of works that reflects the plural character of its collection. Occupying the largest booth in this edition of the fair, the gallery presents a group of works by approximately 30 artists, bringing together a diverse range of names from different generations and territories, with a particular emphasis on contemporary production. Paintings, sculptures, objects, and photographs are brought together through five distinct thematic sections.
One section explores the expansion of the landscape genre through works that renew this tradition by employing materials of diverse natures or proposing unusual forms and iconographies. Artists featured in this section include Janaina Tschäpe, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Miranda Zhang, Alex Červený, Ione Saldanha, Amadeo Lorenzato, and Anísio O. Couto. Another section focuses on the theme of the forest, in dialogue with recent developments that have shaped contemporary ecological debates. Works by Hélio Melo, Francis Alÿs, and Claudia Andujar are presented here. Geometry—so central to the Brazilian avant-gardes—is addressed through works by artists from different generations, including Mira Schendel, Amílcar de Castro, Cildo Meireles, Adriana Varejão, and Luiz Zerbini. As a counterpoint, a group of works highlights the gestural dimension present in the practices of different artists, emphasizing the expressive character and subjective content of their works. Iberê Camargo, Anna Maria Maiolino, Stanley Whitney, and Sonia Gomes are among the artists represented in this section. Finally, the presentation includes works that evoke Afro-Brazilian cosmologies, drawing on the symbolism of African-derived religions. Rubem Valentim, Emanuel Araújo, and Mestre Didi exemplify this final section.
